El bazo es un órgano del tamaño del puño que se encuentra por debajo de la parte inferior izquierda de la caja torácica que elimina los glóbulos rojos y plaquetas desgastados, produce ciertos tipos de glóbulos blancos y destruye bacterias y restos de células. El extracto de bazo proviene principalmente de los bazos de vacas o cerdos. |

El uso principal de los extractos de bazo es luego de una esplenectomía o remoción del bazo. Estudios preliminares indican que el extracto de bazo puede estimular el sistema inmunológico en afecciones como el VIH/SIDA, leucemia, lepra, enfermedad de Crohn y la anemia falciforme. Sin embargo, no existen ensayos clínicos de alta calidad actualmente disponibles sobre el uso del extracto de bazo. |

Ha surgido alguna preocupación sobre la seguridad del extracto de bazo, ya que está hecho de bazos animales, los cuales pueden estar infectados con enfermedades por priones (proteínas priónicas infecciosas). Aunque actualmente no existe ningún informe disponible de enfermedades como la encefalitis espongiforme bovina (enfermedad de la vaca loca), atribuida al consumo de extracto de bazo, la Administración de Drogas y Alimentos de EE.UU. (FDA) sigue tomando precauciones en el uso de cualquier extracto de órgano animal. Aún no está claro la forma en que el procesamiento del extracto de bazo afecta la transmisión de estas enfermedades. |
