Clinical Bottom Line/Effectiveness

Brief Background:

  • Nux vomica is the dried, ripe seed of Strychnos nux-vomica, L., a native tree of Burma, China, eastern India, Thailand, and northern Australia. Traditional Asian medicine includes nux vomica as a remedy. There are reports of poisonous outcomes with traditional use of the seeds or fruit of Strychnos nux-vomica, L.
  • Nux vomica is a common homeopathic remedy for indigestion, vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, constipation, colds, and headaches.
  • In the standard medical literature there is a lack of high-quality evidence for use of nux vomica. This remedy is in the category of unapproved herbs in "The Complete German Commission E Monographs: Therapeutic Guide to Herbal Medicines."
  • Recent laboratory studies have explored the analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiproliferative effects of seed extracts of nux vomica. Although there seems to be some positive evidence, more research needs to be conducted on nux vomica's effect on these conditions.
