New Study Suggests Bleeding Risk from Ginkgo-Warfarin Interaction

New research shows that taking ginkgo while on the anticoagulant drug warfarin significantly increases the risk for bleeding by 38%. While this potential interaction had already been identified, existing research had not yet confirmed the ginkgo-anticoagulant interaction. It had been primarily discussed in case reports. This new study analyzes data from the Veterans Administration (VA) Informatics and Computing Infrastructure medical records database, providing a larger sample size of patients who confirmed the combined use of ginkgo and warfarin as well as data on bleeding events associated with their use.
